Another Major Airline Company Set To Adopt Crypto For Payments

Spain’s leading Airline Company Vueling has announced a partnership with BitPay to allow clients to pay for tickets using cryptocurrencies. The new service, according to the announcement, will begin in 2023.

The airline says it will utilize Universal Air Travel Plan (UATP) technology to offer the new service. The technology will be deployed to offer the service more efficiently.

The first phase of the service launch will see Vueling offering support for 13 crypto assets. These include Bitcoin (BTC), Shiba Inu (SHIB), Litecoin (LTC), Ethereum (ETH), Bitcoin Cash (BCH), Dogecoin (DOGE), and others.

The Service Will Go Live In January 2023

The new service is billed to take off in January 2023, according to the plans. When this materializes, Vueling will become the first low-cost airline company to adopt digital assets as a payment method.

Manager of Distribution and Strategy Alliance at Vueling, Jesús Monzó, commented on the development. He noted that the latest partnership deal is evidence that the company is a “digital airline.”

Vice President of Marketing at BitPay, Merrick Theobald, while commenting on the development, stated that Vueling understands that crypto-assets can transform the airline industry in several ways, this includes making payments more secure, faster, and less expansive.

When it comes to the number of destinations and fleet size, Vueling is the largest airline in Spain. It flies to over 120 locations in the Middle East, Europe, Asia, and Africa.

Vueling has also made efforts to enter other aspects of the crypto industry. Earlier this year, the company announced its presence in the Metaverse after allowing clients to use distribution channels in virtual reality when visualizing and booking their trips.

The Airline Industry Show Increased Interest In Crypto

More airlines have started showing genuine interest in cryptocurrencies. Last month, Dubai’s Emirates Airlines announced plans to start accepting digital payments. The company stated that it will be accepting Bitcoin payments while adding NFTs on its website for trading.

Last year, Simón Bolivar International Airport in Venezuela announced that it will start accepting crypto assets as a means of settlement. According to the director of the airport, Freddy Borges, the movie is geared toward the growth of the domestic tourism sector.
