Stablecoin giant Circle Internet Financial has appointed a former Commodities and Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) Chair as its new legal chief. Heath Tarbert, who served as the 14th Chairman and Chief Executive of the CFTC, has been tapped by the USD Coin issuer for the role of Chief Legal Officer and Head of Corporate Affairs. Circle CEO Jeremy Allaire took to Twitter earlier today to share the news and noted that Tarbert has served in all three branches of the U.S. government.

Circle’s New Legal Chief To Replace Outgoing General Counsel

According to a press release from Circle, Heath Tarbert will replace the stablecoin firm’s outgoing General Counsel Flavia Naves. Naves, who announced her departure earlier this year, oversaw the company’s successful expansion and financing rounds while setting up an effective legal organization. Tarbert, who is coming in from Citadel Securities, brings vast experience to his new role.

The former CFTC Chair previously worked at the World Bank, the U.S. Department of Treasury, the Financial Stability Board, the White House counsel, U.S. Department of Justice and also served as the deputy Finance Minister for G-7/G-20. Tarbert also had stints at the U.S. Supreme Court and the U.S. Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs.

As we continue building a bridge between traditional finance and Web3, Heath’s perspective, legal acumen, and global regulatory experience will help us advance the utility value of USDC worldwide.”

Jeremy Allaire, CEO of Circle Internet Financial

Heath Tarbert will assume his new role at the stablecoin firm on July 1, 2023. Allaire stated that Tarbert would provide expertise and leadership to the company’s executive leadership team. “I’m thrilled by the opportunity to help Circle’s efforts to evolve the global financial system and encourage policymakers to establish sound rules for digital assets that provide clarity, coherence, and protection for people and businesses,” Tarbert stated.
